Pediatric Eye Exams That Help Kids Thrive

We believe early vision care sets the foundation for success in school, sports, and life, and we’re here to make it easy for families in Logan, Cache Valley, and Southern Idaho.

What’s Included in a Pediatric Eye Exam?

Our comprehensive exams for children go well beyond checking for 20/20 vision. We evaluate the entire visual system to identify issues that can impact learning, development, and overall quality of life. We adjust our exams based on age, symptoms, and visual history.

During your child’s visit, we’ll assess:

  • Distance and near vision

  • Eye teaming (how well the eyes work together)

  • Eye movement and tracking

  • Focus flexibility

  • Depth perception

  • Color vision

  • Signs of strabismus (eye turn) or amblyopia (lazy eye)

  • Overall eye health and growth

We also take the time to explain our findings and ensure you understand what to expect, whether your child requires glasses, a referral, or just a yearly check-in.

When Should Kids Get Their First Eye Exam?

Many vision problems start early, and not all of them have obvious symptoms. That’s why we recommend:

  • First exam by age 2–3, or sooner if concerns arise.

  • Another exam before starting kindergarten or school.

  • Annual or biannual follow-ups, depending on symptoms or risk factors.

Even if your child passed a school screening or seems to see well, a full pediatric eye exam checks much more than what those screenings can catch.

Kids may not always know how to describe what they’re seeing, but we know how to uncover it through gentle testing and thoughtful conversation.

Vision Affects More Than Just Sight

Vision plays a major role in a child’s ability to learn, focus, and engage confidently. When something feels off, kids often don’t say, “I can’t see well”  instead, it shows up as:

  • Trouble paying attention

  • Headaches or eye rubbing

  • Squinting or covering one eye

  • Avoiding reading or schoolwork

  • Behavioral changes or frustration

These behaviors are sometimes misdiagnosed as learning disorders or attention challenges, when the real issue is vision-related. A thorough pediatric eye exam helps distinguish between the two, providing your child with the clarity they need to succeed in and out of the classroom.

A Calm, Kid-Friendly Experience from Start to Finish

Dr. Cottrell has decades of experience working with children of all ages, and as a father of five daughters and grandfather to five grandchildren, he brings genuine patience and warmth to every exam.

We explain each step to you and your child, adjusting our approach according to their comfort level, age, and attention span. We never rush, and we’re happy to take breaks or adjust our approach when needed to make the process feel more like a visit than a procedure.

If your child needs vision correction, we’ll guide you through options and provide a written prescription.
